Ngā Uri o Maikuku rāua ko Huatakaroa 1891 Trust is opening the Whānau and Hapū Initiative Fund 2026 to support practical kaupapa led by whānau, hapū, marae and community groups.

This fund supports initiatives that create collective benefit for the descendants of Maikuku rāua ko Huatakaroa.

What this fund supports

The fund supports kaupapa that bring people together, strengthen culture, support wellbeing, build capability, and respond to practical community needs.

This is not individual sponsorship funding. Funding must support a group, kaupapa, marae, hapū or wider whānau benefit.

Funding amounts

Small whānau or group-led initiatives
$500 to $1,500

Examples:

  • one-day whakapapa, te reo or tikanga wānanga
  • small kaumātua gathering or wellbeing day
  • rangatahi activity or mentoring session
  • budgeting or financial literacy workshop
  • māra kai materials for a whānau group
  • kai, venue hire, printing or resources for a small kaupapa
Larger community, hapū or marae-led kaupapa
up to $5,000

Examples:

  • marae-led wānanga series
  • hapū or community event involving wider whānau
  • multi-session rangatahi leadership or mentoring programme
  • cultural archive, oral history or storytelling project
  • community māra kai or sustainability kaupapa
  • whānau enterprise or capability-building programme
  • wider wellbeing, education or whānau connection initiative

Funding may be approved in full or in part. There is no guarantee applicants will receive the full amount requested.

Who can apply

You do not need to be a charitable trust or incorporated organisation to apply.

Applications may be made by:

  • whānau groups
  • hapū groups
  • marae
  • registered beneficiaries applying on behalf of a group kaupapa
  • affiliated community groups or organisations delivering kaupapa that benefits NUOMRKH whānau

An individual may be the contact person or organiser, but the funding must not be for private or personal benefit.

Applicants must show a clear connection to Maikuku rāua ko Huatakaroa, or show how the kaupapa will benefit descendants of Maikuku rāua ko Huatakaroa.

Funding priorities

Cultural Revitalisation & Identity

Whakapapa, tikanga, te reo Māori, mātauranga, oral history, cultural education, connection to whenua and marae.

Housing & Economic Resilience

Financial literacy, whānau enterprise capability, practical housing support, employment pathways, social enterprise, economic resilience.

Whānau Wellbeing & Hauora

Kaumātua connection, whānau wellbeing, mental wellbeing, rongoā Māori, access to support, activities that reduce isolation.

Education & Capability Development

Learning, mentoring, rangatahi leadership, governance training, digital skills, business skills, practical capability.

Community Engagement & Unity

Whānau gatherings, hapū connection, intergenerational kaupapa, communication, digital inclusion, activities that bring descendants together.

A kaupapa can align with more than one priority.

What cannot be funded

The fund will not support:

  • individual sponsorship
  • personal travel
  • personal development for private benefit
  • sports, arts or cultural representation for one person
  • hardship or personal living costs
  • private business costs
  • alcohol
  • gambling
  • political campaigning
  • costs already incurred before approval, unless specifically approved
  • activities that are unsafe, unlawful, discriminatory, or inconsistent with the Trust’s kaupapa
